Remember when you were a kid, or an adult helping a kid with the classic pinewood derby? You were given a block of wood, and created a derby car with wheels and wieghts to send flying down a track?
Phorge Makerspace is teaming up with schools and the community to put a modern twist on the classic pinewood derby, going Uphill with a handmade motorized vehicle!
The Goal is for kids an adults to utilize the maker space, and its equipment, and understand what is possible when you combine an idea with technology and community
Here is the rough idea:
Teams of up to 6 students from 7th to 12 grade compete in a robot obstacle course derby race.
The final competition will be run as a tournament bracket
Teams have months to prepare and custom build their ultimate robot
Resources are available at Phorge Makerspace to design and create crafts
Teams
Teams will consist of 2 to 6 students
Each team will be responsible to pay an entry fee to cover materials and Phorge usage
Only the students are allowed to work on the crafts themselves, help from a Mentor or adult can be used for printing / cutting of materials. All design, and assembly must be performed by the students.
Each team will have a Phorge mentor that can assist with design, printing, cutting, etc..
A specific box of materials will be supplied to each team.
- Motors
- Axles
- Power supplies – 18650 power cells?
- Random parts (power switch, wires, lego’s)
- RC motor(s)
The drive motors and power supply’s that in the kit must be used and will be checked before the competition.
The other parts are all optional and can be used at the team’s discretion
Any other parts used must be made via 3d printing, laser cutting, or fabricated by hand.
